This past weekend, I tuned into NPR's podcast "How I Built This with Guy Raz." The episode featured an interview with Jerry Murrell, the brains behind the Five Guys franchise. Jerry recounted his early inspiration from a local hamburger vendor, known as “Push em’ up” Tony, in his hometown. Tony's simple yet popular burger stand left a lasting impression on Jerry. Later, a visit to Ocean City, Maryland introduced him to Thrasher’s boardwalk fries, where he noticed that despite many fry vendors, Thrasher's always drew the longest lines. This observation led to a lightbulb moment for Jerry, planting the seed for a business model focused on “keeping it simple”.

With an initial investment of $35,000, Jerry and his sons launched their first Five Guys outlet. By 2005, they expanded to five locations, and now, they boast an impressive 1,700 outlets globally.

When Raz inquired about Jerry's mother and what she would have thought of the Five Guys concept, Jerry fondly recalled her love for hamburgers. He shared her belief that a good hamburger or drink could always ensure a steady income, highlighting her influence on his entrepreneurial journey.
