About Chipotle

This past weekend, I had the chance to listen to NPR's "How I Built This with Guy Raz." The episode featured an engaging chat with Steve Ells, the founder of Chipotle.
Steve discussed the unexpected rapid growth of Chipotle. Initially, his goal was to open just one location and use its earnings to start a larger restaurant. However, the success of the first Chipotle exceeded his expectations, altering his plans. He openly shared about feeling somewhat overwhelmed as the business expanded and how he grappled with self-doubt during that time. When Guy Raz questioned him about managing people and operations without a formal business background, Steve emphasized the importance of learning on the job and evolving through experience, which he said greatly improved his hiring skills.
He also talked about a key lesson from cooking school, “Mise en place,” a French term meaning having everything in its right place for effective service. This concept, he explained, was crucial to his approach in business.
