In a 2022 episode of the "How I Built This with Guy Raz" podcast, the spotlight was on Todd Graves, founder of Raising Cane’s. Graves, an LSU alumnus, birthed the idea for a college-centric restaurant during his college days. Alongside his middle school friend Craig, he honed in on a simple yet appealing menu: chicken fingers, Texas toast, and crinkle-cut fries, capitalizing on the rising popularity of boneless chicken. Their journey from a business class project at LSU to reality wasn't easy. Despite skepticism from family and friends, Graves was determined to fund his venture, undertaking challenging jobs, including working in an oil refinery and on an Alaskan fishing boat.
Finally, with sufficient capital, the duo launched their first outlet near LSU. Today, their success is evident in over 700 locations. Graves highlighted the significant challenges in scaling from one to two restaurants, emphasizing that growth shouldn’t overstretch resources. He discovered that problems didn't just double but multiplied. Nevertheless, his determination and strategic approach helped him overcome these hurdles, leading to the development of a robust, mainly corporate-owned chain with a well-defined operational playbook.
